Avatar: The Way of Water is now in theaters and has become a billion-dollar grossing hit. The franchise is a big moneymaker, and Avatar 3 has reportedly already been shot. Though the film has no subtitle, and its special effects will no doubt take a decent amount of time to complete, the third film is set to release on December 20, 2024.

In a recently translated interview with the French magazine 20 Minutes, Cameron was asked what fans can expect in Avatar 3. Cameron promised to show more of Pandora and said the final installments of the franchise will be the best (equating the first installments to an “introduction”). “Different cultures than the ones I have already shown. Fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to show the Na’vi in a different light because so far I have only shown their good side,” Cameron added. “In the first films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples. In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite.”
Like The Way of Water, Avatar 3 will expand the franchise’s lore by introducing these new Ash People. The Way of Water introduced audiences to the Sea People Na’vi, who were more adapted to a reef-side existence. Their skin is lighter than Forest People Na’vi, their bodies and tails broader, and their hands are webbed. It’s unclear what these Ash People will be like, but given Cameron’s comments, they’ll probably be more antagonistic than other Na’vi.
Avatar 2 established that different types of Na’vi have animosity toward each other. However, the Sea People were still relatively close in beliefs to the Forest People. They still believed in Eywa and had similar rituals. There’s no telling how different the Ash People may be and what their relationship with the other Na’vi is like
Cameron has plenty of ideas for the future of Pandora. He recently revealed that his Avatar 4 script had no notes from studio executives, who were impressed with the franchise’s direction. Cameron has gone so far as to say he wants seven Avatar films in total, but there’s no telling where the final tally will lie.
