Gunn and Peter Safran are currently running DC’s film division. Though the DCEU has attracted a strong fanbase, it hasn’t necessarily brought in the revenue executives were hoping for. There have been numerous setbacks for the universe, which has struggled to catch up to the MCU throughout its existence. Now that Walter Hamada is out as DC Films Chief and Gunn and Safran are in, there’s been rumblings about a major creative reshuffling at the studio, which may apply to Gadot’s Wonder Woman.

In an Instagram reply, Gunn responded to a fan who claimed that the decision to boot Henry Cavill’s Superman and Gadot’s Wonder Woman “doesn’t inspire confidence.” Gunn responded, “I’m not sure where you’re getting that we ‘booted’ Gal.” His comment could be taken multiple ways: Gadot may not be leaving the DC Universe, Gadot may have left of her own accord, or it could be as simple as Gadot having left the studio under friendly circumstances.
Gunn has previously cleared up rumors about Wonder Woman 3’s cancellation, but there’s been no official word on if Gadot will return as Wonder Woman. Patty Jenkins appears to be done with her iteration of the DC franchise, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that Gunn’s vision includes recasting Gadot. Jenkins reportedly walked away from the project over creative differences regarding the direction of Wonder Woman. However, there was no indication of whether Gadot was stepping or if she would remain attached.
Replacing Gadot’s Wonder Woman may be inevitable. Cavill confirmed he is no longer be playing Superman, and Gunn has stated he is writing a new script for the character, which will require a younger actor (the plot involves a younger Clark Kent who’s just starting). Ben Affleck’s status as Batman hasn’t been confirmed, but rumors have circulated that he’s been done with the role for several years now.
Gunn isn’t afraid to interact with DC fans, and that means he’s been having to clear the air over a lot of speculation and rumors lately. His rise over the film division at DC has attracted a certain amount of vitriol in his direction, and Gunn has been clear that he understands the reasoning behind that, but much of it is unwarranted. While he can’t announce what the plan will be moving forward just yet (including Wonder Woman’s future), Gunn has tried to paint the departures in his era as a mostly amicable occurrence.
Wonder Woman is available on HBO Max.
