It looks as though that quality of his is in full force with the production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which just finished shooting. Gunn shared a photo of the main cast to commemorate the occasion, only for some to quickly realize that one important team member just so happened to be absent. Luckily, there wasn’t any unfortunate reason why she didn’t appear in the photo. In fact, the reason might be the exact opposite of unfortunate.

Gunn announced the end of production via a Twitter post, sharing a happy shot of the main cast (and himself) all smiles together on a couch along with a heartfelt message about the end of this particular era. “And that’s a picture wrap on the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy,” Gunn wrote. “I love this amazing cast & crew & their beautiful talent & kind souls. I’m a lucky human to have them on the journey with me for nearly a decade.” Seeing as the picture featured stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementeiff, and Sean Gunn with Zoe Saldaña nowhere in sight, he immediately followed it up with an explanation as to why she didn’t appear alongside the rest of the crew.

“(And yes Zoe was with us but the only picture I have with her has an unannounced actor with us!)” Gunn added in a second tweet, sharing a photo of Saldaña with Peacemaker star Jennifer Holland. That’s right. Even aside from Will Poulter joining Guardians 3 as Adam Warlock, it looks as though there will be even more surprises beyond the expected ones. Of course, that’s pretty much what one would expect from any superhero movie these days. But this is a Gunn production after all, and the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie at that. So maybe that’s a reason to up those hype levels just a tad. He already teased some “wonderful cameos for true Guardians fans” recently, so that might help guide expectations.

Guardians of the Galaxy has resonated so well with fans since Gunn’s first film in the series in 2014 that the formerly obscure comic book team has gone on to plenty of new heights. Even beyond the 2 sequels and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, it also no doubt inspired the enthusiasm that brought Eidos-Montréal’s surprisingly fantastic Guardians of the Galaxy video game to life. The story of a ragtag group of intergalactic rejects becoming a team of heroes and a found family along the way really does have a lot going for it.

So who could the unannounced actor be? Will it be a new character entirely or an exciting cameo from one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s established stars? Only time will tell. (But it definitely wouldn’t be the worst situation if it ends up being Cosmo the Russian space dog.)

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is set to release in theaters on May 5th, 2023.
